Black Panther Scores 3 Wins at 2019 Oscars

BLACK PANTHER became the first Oscar-winning film from Marvel Studios, taking home three awards – for Costume Design, Production Design, and Original Score.

Costume designer Ruth Carter won her first Oscar, having been previously nominated for her work on MALCOLM X and AMISTAD. With the win, Carter cemented her place in Oscar history, as the first African American woman to win in the category. In her joyful acceptance speech, Carter acknowledged friend, former collaborator, and now fellow Oscar winner Spike Lee, saying “Wow, this has been a long time coming. Spike Lee, thank you for my start. I hope this makes you proud!”

Ruth Carter’s win was not the only historic win for the BLACK PANTHER team! Bringing home the Oscar for Production Design were the duo of Jay Hart and Hannah Beachler, who became the first African-American to be nominated for – and win – in this category. In her deeply moving acceptance speech, Beachler said “I am stronger because of Marvel, who gave me the opportunity to do my best, who supported the vision of this film and lifted us up every day.”

Ludwig Goransson won his first Oscar for BLACK PANTHER’s original score (which he also won a Grammy for mere days ago!) In his speech, Goransson thanked director Ryan Coogler, with whom he was a student at USC. “Working with you has been an incredible honor,” he said. “I remember 12 years ago we were sitting in our dorm room at USC writing the score for your first film, and we’re here 12 years later celebrating one of the most important cinematic moments in history.”
